Why You Can’t Stop Eating Fast Food

Jeffry Weiss asked:

This is far more than some philosophical discussion. America is standing at a precipice. Two-thirds of the population is overweight or obese . . . and those numbers are growing every day. Our health care system is going broke, the average 9 year old child in our country has half their arteries closed by fat, people are having heart attacks in their thirties, diabetes in their twenties. This research, which began as an interesting article, quickly became imperative.

Here is what I found: As I discuss in my book, Why W Eat . . . and why we keep eating, there are numerous ways in which the body signals the brain to switch the appetite center off and on. Sugary foods trigger an endorphin reaction, which, as we have explained previously induces feelings of euphoria. Sugary foods, and foods high on the glycemic scale, also signal the release of insulin, which causes food cravings. Protein high in saturated fats trigger endorphin release, while foods low in saturated fat trigger the release of CCK, a hormone that signals the brain to shut down the appetite center. Omega-3 fatty acids in fish curb the appetite. Monosaturated fats in olive oil, nuts, and free-ranging animals shut down the appetite. Fiber expands the stomach that turns off the appetite. Chocolate is a powerful endorphin trigger.

Now comes new research by Dr. Alan Hirsch, M.D., a neurologist and founder of the Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation, in Chicago. Dr. Hirsch has uncovered some amazing facts. He explains that the taste and smell of the foods we eat can effectively turn off the appetite center in the brain. His research showed that certain smells caused overweight people to reduce their cravings, and therefore eat less. He found that foods cooked with aromatic ingredients like garlic, onions, herbs and spices satisfy the appetite more completely.

So, lets combine what we know concerning fast food. First, they are high in saturated fat, which is one of the strongest endorphin releasers. Two, sugar, another endorphin trigger, is used liberally in fountain drinks and shakes. Three, all breads and buns contain gluten, another famous endorphin trigger. Four, many of the foods (think French fries) are high on the glycemic scale. Five, most of the foods available in fast food chains are not cooked with any of the spices (see above) that signal the satiety center in the brain to shut down the appetite.

Fast food chains use all of the available tricks to get you to eat their fare . . . and to keep eating. We have to fight back with the knowledge of how they do it, and to have ready alternatives at hand. Our book, Why We Eat . . . and why we keep eating, provides you with the information and the motivation to use the information! There’s a synergy that occurs when you’ve got the info, the inspiration, and the products that minimize your appetite so you can regain control of your diet and your life. Our proprietary line of products can help you to get and keep control of your appetite and rev up your metabolism so you can lose weight even when you’re not on an exercise program.

Tid-Bit: The power of pistachios A new study found that pistachios contain a significant amount of lutein, an antioxidant that may play a major role in preventing cataracts and macular degeneration. Lutein is commonly found in dark green leafy vegetables and fruits and vegetables that are yellow or orange. One ounce serving of pistachios contains about the same amount of lutein as one-forth a cup of fresh broccoli.

Tips for Fast Food Eating

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

Vivian W. asked:

Often when someone is trying to diet or eat healthy they assume they have to give up fast food eating. This isn’t entirely true. Yes you should limit your intake of fatty foods. However if you are conscious of what you eat and only do so occasionally its perfectly fine to eat out. When you do go out there are a few tips that you should use as guidelines to make sure you don’t ruin your diet.

1. Watch your portion size. Most restaurants serve portions of food that could easily be enough for two people to eat. In order to prevent overeating you can ask for a take home box and place half your meal in it before you begin eating. You can also split your meal with someone else. Splitting dessert is also a good idea as it allows you to indulge your sweet tooth without ruining your waistline.

2. Order your food undressed. Most places add mayonnaise, salad dressings, and cheese to the food before it arrives. Often the amount is far more then is necessary. Instead ask that they put these things to be put on the side or eliminated all together. You will save countless calories by doing this.

3. Stay away from buffets. Even healthy buffets such as salad bars can be a diet disaster. Consider the fact that they load them with unhealthy options like bacon bits and fatty dressings. This will lull you into a sense of security and you’ll end up eating far more calories then you realize. Some of us also have a tendency to try to eat our moneys worth rather then just enough to be full. If you do go to a buffet avoid creamy dressings and only eat until full.

4. See fast food eating as a big picture. If you know that you are planning a night out try to adjust your meals as necessary. For example if your going out to eat with friends for dinner make sure that you cut back on calories for breakfast and lunch. You should also make sure that you eat more healthy foods as often fast food eating is lacking in nutrition.

Lift Your Spirits: 18 Quick Fixes for the Winter Doldrums

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

Jamie Jefferson asked:

This is the time of year when I am always looking for a little lift. This string of days before spring unfolds just seem to stretch on and on.

Each year, it seems, I try something new at these times. Here are 18 things that have worked for me to lift the winter doldrums. See if any of these might work for you.

1. Try out a new exercise: something you’ve never done before. Whether you buy a new workout tape or try the Hot Yoga class at your gym, get moving in new ways.

2. Try a new hair color. It doesn’t have to be anything dramatic. Just ask your stylist to add a few highlights to brighten up your look a bit.

3. Give to a new charity. With your family, research causes that are important to you and decide on a charitable gift. Whether you give time or money, making a new and fresh contribution can really renew your energy this time of year.

4. Buy something that screams spring. Treat yourself to a new breezy caftan top or some sporty new sunglasses. At the very least, go to your favorite boutique and try on a few of the new sandals styles for spring.

5. Treat yourself to a bouquet of fresh flowers as a centerpiece for your dining room table.

6. Test drive a convertible.

7. Find a new fragrance. Go to the cosmetics counter and sniff around for something light, airy, and floral.

8. Open the windows.

9. Get your bicycle tuned up.

10. Buy a large, healthy plant for your office.

11. Even if it’s still chilly in your part of the world, aim to spend at least 30 minutes each day outside. A little sunlight and fresh air can really help to burn off the doldrums.

12. Have salad for dinner. My kids love taco salad on crisp iceberg. Another great choice is Caesar salad with marinated chicken strips.

13. Fire up the grill.

14. Get a pedicure.

15. Add a few colorful accents to your home. A few new pillows or rugs can lift your spirits.

16. Break yourself out of your routine. Sometimes our feelings of hibernation come in because school and work schedules during the winter don’t afford many choices. And then we get stuck and a little burned out. Each day, change one thing in your normal routine. Call an old friend during your lunch hour. Drive a new way home from work. Bring home takeout from a new place.

17. Book a quick, last minute spring getaway for the weekend. Ask your friends for the most enjoyable road trip they have taken recently and follow in their footsteps.

18. Find a Community-Supported-Agriculture (CSA) initiative to participate in this summer. When we started getting involved, we began to really anticipate the arrival of our fresh, organically and locally grown produce each year, and it helped us to pay attention and to appreciate the natural rhythm of the seasons. This is a great time to do your research and anticipate the way those fresh raspberries and tomatoes will taste on your summer table.

How will you beckon the arrival of spring?
